Back to Basic: A Try in Analogue Photography

I got myself a simple, cheap camera for my try in Analogue Photography. I think it's called a toy-camera and I bought for only S$80. I'm not very familiar with prices of this kind of camera so I'm not sure if I bought it in a more expensive price. Well, so long as I get what I want it's fine.

My new baby is a black Holga 135BC camera! And now that I think about it, I could have bought other color for a more fun look. I actually planned to buy a cheaper and cuter toy camera - Supeheadz Wide and Slim Series- just to have a try in using film cameras. However, the idea of having more control in the camera entices me so I ended up buying Holga. Up to this date, I have only used a single roll of 36 frames so I don't know if I can really manage it. I just left the film in a shop for processing and printing so I will only get to know the result by next week. I am really hoping that I have some decent photos.

Earlier in 2000's, I am using a film camera owned by my family - Canon Ixus Z70. I also used an old, black film camera which I believe is also a Canon product. Those cameras are film but it automatically advanced the frame in the film after pressing the shutter. But after trying out the Holga, I realized that analogue photography is more complex than what I thought. I have created funny moments even though I only used a single roll of film.

Most of the time, I will forget to advance the film hence causing multiple exposures in a single frame. When I realized that, I have walked far away from the subject. So, I have to go back and re-take the pictures. Frankly speaking, it's wasting my effort of staying under the hot sun. If I did not forget to advance the film, I might have forgotten to remove the lens cap. I just find myself laughing for the idiotic acts I did.

I actually don't have full control of the camera. The aperture was fixed to F/8 for cloudy or flash setting, and F/11 for sunny setting. The shutter spead was a fixed 1/100. And the ISO? I learned that it depends on the type of film you are using. I used an ISO 200 film for my first try even though my camera manual advises me to use ISO 100 or ISO 400. There were also various types of films that I am yet to learn. There were types with higher saturation and contrast, and even black and white. Just how interesting is Analogue Photography? And why did I only discover this now? Had I known earlier, I could have owned a couple of film cameras now. Well, I am planning to buy another film camera, a more advanced one, if the results of my Holga are good. (29.06.12)

Beer Trail: Drink Responsibly

After discovering the coffee trail and checking back on the page of Be Disloyal every now and then, I've come to experience an entirely new foodie adventure. I can say that this is not my thing because I honestly don't drink too much of beer. I don't like the taste and the aroma. But, why not try it,right?

I just turned 21 not long ago, and I believe I'm of a very legal age despite my looks. Furthermore, it feels very adult-like drinking at posh bars with a friend, or alone. Although it would be weird to be reading a book over a cold bottle of beer or cider. Even worse if I'm reading juvenile fiction or fairy tale. I never did that, though. And I may suggest that no one do that. It's just too weird. Really.

Most importantly, please drink responsibly. I am not encouraging whoever is reading this to drink. Probably that's why I only published this post by the time that the Beer Trail is over. And I am also not forcing whoever is reading this to quit drinking. That's your choice and I really have nothing to do with that. But bear in mind that only you will be responsible for your own actions and decisions...so, be wise.

Save the best for last, they say. But in this trail, you have to get the best first so you can enjoy it in the end.

Note: Further reading leads to discovery of not-so-much-adult materials.

The CARD

Heart of House
4 Kim Tian Road
visit their page

This was the first restaurant and bar that my friend and I went to start the Beer Trail. It was a chic, modern restaurant that is a bit crafty. I know that I cannot properly describe it but...yeah. I'll let some of my photos do the description for me.

It has a nice interior design even though the space was not too big. The furnitures were basically black and white in colors which is common. Once you enter the restaurant, you would notice that they have their craft beers on display and you know that you just have to try one of the bottles they have. In their station counter, they have decors like random stuff you'll see in the kitchen, like kettle and stainless steel lunch box. In the bar counter, there were also random stuff like a small motorbike, a stuff toy, and an antique weight measuring device. I think that the style of the restaurant is suitable for young female professionals. The place just gives me that kind of feeling. I liked it and it feels cozy there.

The best thing about this restaurant is their wide selection of drinks, although these are mostly beers. They also have a good range of ciders and fruit beers which is very favorable for me. Another plus for the females, that is. And the food? They have a good selection of western dishes. They also have some Mexican dishes in the menu. And the dessert part doesn't have much but there are some desserts that I would like to try on my next visit.

My friend and I only had a drink and some snacks since we just had coffee before coming in there. I ordered Honeydew Melon Beer while my friend had a Rose Cider. My drink was good and there really is a taste of the honeydew melon. The aroma is enticing too.

Heart of House is located along Kim Tian road perpendicular to Tiong Baru Road. It was nearby the Tiong Bahru MRT Station and is also accessible by bus. You can either alight at Central Green Condominium or Tiong Bahru Plaza bus stops in bus numbers: 5, 216, 33, 63, 123, 195, 195A, or 851.

Wok & Barrel

I went to this restaurant which is close by the city and is also nearby another restaurant that's participating in Beer Trail. When I went here, the plan was to actually go to 2 restaurants in one day but that failed.
The restaurant looked small from the outside but they have a reasonable number of tables on the inner part. The restaurant is mostly white in color with accents of black in furniture and decorations. The interior was classy and chic. It was obviously a modern restaurant with a touch of elegance. The bar counter was placed under the staircase going to the second level. It was a small eye-catching bar counter, and I would say that it was odd.

I sat on a two-seater table beside a wall on the inner part of the restaurant. It was high noon so there are not much people in the restaurant. The ceiling above my seat was made of glass and I can see the windows of the higher floors. I thought that the view was artistic and I loved it.

I only had a glass of Jungle beer, which is a draft beer. The menu is somposed of innovated Asian cuisine. I didn't like the food they are serving so I didn't get myself anything to eat. the staff gave me a plate of naan (Indian bread), though. The selection for the drinks are also limited.

Wok & Barrel is a small looking restaurant located in a street lined with other restaurants and bar at Duxton Hill.. You could give the area a visit since there are interesting stuffs there. There's also a pastry shop that sells creative cakes.

Ji Biru Japanese Craft Beer
313 Somerset Road
visit their page

This alfresco restaurant and bar is Japanese inspired and their specialty are, of course, Japanese beers and dishes.

Since it is an open bar, there would be no interiors right? So then, the furniture is made of wood in Japanese style.

They have a quite wide variety of drinks, mostly beers. The food menu doesn't have much in it. They have juts enough for good bites.

The place is just located in the most convenient area and getting here is very easy. You can take MRT which is more convenient. Just alight in Somerset Station of the North-South Line (Red Line) then go outside of the Somerset 313 main mall. The one lined with resto-bars and is leading to H&M. Or you can take the bus and alight at either Somerset Station or Midpoint Orchard or Opposite Mandarin Gallery.

Big Bad Wolf
226 Tanjong Katong
visit their page

This restaurant and bar is just a typical-looking store along an array of restaurants and bars in Tanjong Katong. Honestly, I got off the wrong bus stop so I had to walk more than a kilometer to get here.

It was a cute 2-storey resto-bar with the fairy tale theme. Uhm, actually, with the fairy tales' villain - the Big Bad Wolf. Remember him from Red Riding Hood, Three Little Pigs, and the 7 kid goats stories? That was him! The resto-bar's wolf was named Arnold Wolfie. You'll see lots of wolf designs inside the restaurant. It's really crafty and artistic. I love this restaurant. I would have gone here several times if it's not that far in the east.

They have quite a selection of drinks too. Well, not much for the fruit beers or ciders which I prefer, but you can definitely enjoy the variety they have. I had a Peach Beer and an Apple Pie a la mode with butterscotch sauce. I highly recommend the dessert because it's just heaven. The pie's crust is not hard which relieves me of the trouble of eating a pie. It's complemented with vanilla ice cream which will be served almost melting because the pie is hot. And, oh! The butterscotch sauce is just love. Well, juts try it. I like how it complemented my Peach Beer.

Old Empire Gastro Bar
491 River Valley Road
visit their page

This bar gives off the exquisite, high-end tavern feeling. It's mostly bar and they don't have much of tables. You can just sit on a high stool and have a good cold drink while chatting with friends.

The place is small but they have a really wide range of drinks, from beers to wines. You might not make up your mind quickly so just drink moderately and get another drink if you can manage.

I had a Strawberry-Lime Cider here and a good talk with a colleague.

The Good Beer Company
Blk 335 Smith Street
visit their page

First of all, I would mention that basically this place is not a bar. It was a store located in a food center in Chinatown. It's quite tricky finding this place that I have to ask the visitors' center in the area.

So then, it was the oddest one of all the bars and restaurants but definitely that best find. If you can't take drinking in a food center, you have the option to bring the drink home. Unique right? I actually took the bottle home.

Being located in a food center, the advantage is that you have a wide variety of food to go along with your drink. What's more? The drinks available are not the typical ones you can get from a normal drink stall in a hawker center. You have a selection of good beers and even ciders before you. The person selling the drinks is as good as a bartender. Ask him about what he sells and he'll tell you more than you want to know.

The best thing about this store is that you can get a good bottle of drink for a cheaper price as compared to when you buy the same drink in other restaurants and bars. I got a Strawberry-Lime Cider here for only $12. It's a good deal.

Next Door Cafe and Taverna
699 East Coast Road
visit their page

I mentioned that Big Bad Wolf is far in the east, right? Well, as compared to Next Door Cafe and Taverna, that restaurant is much closer to the city center.

I went to this restaurant second to the last because it was too far from my place. Besides the location, everything in this restaurant is lovely.

The interior is that of a family restaurant. There is a corner with bookshelf and they have this book for exchange thing. I never asked about it but I'm guessing it was getting a book from them and exchanging what you have in hand, or somehting like that.

They have table candles placed on wine bottles and you can see that the melted candles have piled up in the mouth of the bottle. The silverwares were tied in a cute ribbon that I want to take home but I did not. The chinawares were like so random like the ones your mom is probably keeping in the cupboards in your kitchen. The glasses, sadly, are normal.

You'll get the cozy feeling while staying in the restaurant.  The ambiance is is very soothing and you can just tak eyour tiome eating with family or friends. I had a Toffee Apple Cider and Seafood Spaghetti in tomato based sauce. I didn't like the pasta I ordered. The sauce is more like soup. The Toffee Apple Cider is good. It's sweet but not too sweet. I'll definitely have this one again.

Oosters Belgian Brasserie
25 Church Street
visit their page

I tried visiting this place prior to drinking here and it gives me the high-end feeling so I saved it for last. It was located in a high-end district of Raffles, anyway.
By observation, I noticed that most of the people going here are office people. There were several offices in the area and of course, a good day should end with a good drink. Old man's thinking, eh?

Anyway, the place is good. It wasn't that big of a restaurant and bar, or brasserie, and the seating capacity is not that much. It has almost the same theme with Old Empire Gastro Bar, just that this resto-bar has the Belgian theme. And surely, you'll find good Belgian drinks here, and chocolate desserts too.

I had a cold bottle of Cherry Beer and Chocolate Mousse topped with sliced strawberrry. That was the first time that I actually ate and finished a strawberry fruit. The chocolate mousse was good but quite dull. It complemented the strawberry but not my Cherry Beer.

More photos to follow.

Portrait Photography: Person, Camera, Nature as One

I have been taking snapshots of my friends every now and then. Sometimes I force them and sometimes I am forced to. I get fair results and a favorite every time so it's fine. This time, however, there was an agreement from both parties, the photographer, me, and the model, my friend.

The venue was in the nearby park in the neighborhood - Zhenghua Park. I told my friend to wear floral or earthy colors since I will take the color out either way. I like black and white or sepia photographs, that's why. I had my fair share of fun and portrait photography, I think that was what it's called, is difficult for various reasons. Firstly, I don't have a tripod and a remote shutter. These are the first two things that I need to get the next time I buy an accessory. Secondly, humans are just too complex that it annoys me. They are moving so I have to capture the movements at the very moment. It will never be repeated so once I missed the chance to do so, I'll never have a next time. Even if I say that, I somewhat like taking pictures of people. Candid, ones. It feels more real to me.

The photos during our photo-shoot were below. I would gladly appreciate comments.

21 Days to 21st

I'm 21 and this post is dedicated to my last 21 days before turning 21. You may stop reading if you find what I'm saying corny 'cause all the stuff following would be even more cornier. Basically, this is just a 21-day journal of my life before turning 21. And I know that the subject is very boring, but this is my blog, anyway. I am also well aware that this post is long ago overdue.

I don't usually think of or feel anything special whenever my birthday is approaching. Besides that facts that I'm turning a year older and I'm getting farther from my childhood years, there is really nothing special. If my family plans to do something, then let it be. If my friends want to invite me out, I just go with the flow. I always think of myself as a boring person so I don't consider 'My Day' as anything special at all. This year, twenty-twelve, is different though.

Twenty-one. It sounds wild, fun and free. It is an age beyond legal age, and is considered part of adulthood - an age of a young professional - but still considered as young. I always hear people telling me "You look so young" or "You're still young but you're already working". Even now, I still don't know how to respond properly. Perhaps, I will never get used to it. The only thing that I hate about having young looks is that I am always questioned in the Immigration Counter of the airport every time I am leaving my country. "My passport is valid, right? I managed to go in and out of the Philippines several times now, and you can see all those stamps. Besides, my birthdate is clearly stated there, so why still ask me?" is what I wish to say to the Immigration Officer the last time I left my country. But! I did not. Besides that, I can enjoy all the perks of looking young.

21 days to go (10 April 2012)
It's my day off from work and one of my friend's birthday who is now living in London. I just stayed at home. The day's highlight was me baking cookies. To add some twist, I placed marshmallow bits into some of the cookies. And I will never do that again. :/

20 days to go (11 Arpil 2012)
I was invited to attend a free session for Bikram hot yoga. I had it scheduled today. I've been wanting to have some kind of health routine and this was it! It was a 26-posture yoga session for one and a half hour in a hot room. I certainly sweat a lot more compared to when I am jogging.

19 days to go (12 April 2012)
My shift ends at 1 in the morning, and yes, the date was correct. When I reached home, I found a small, fat, cute mice in the staircase. I stayed to watch it for a few minutes. it is trying to go up the steps and reach me. It's wise since it tried using the area that holds the handrail for the stairs. The thing is, it cannot really go further because it was sliding down. It was a funny little fellow. I actually thought of taking it with me but I don't think I can manage a pet.

18 days to go (13 April 2012)
I attended my second class for the hot yoga and had my lunch at Lucky Plaza - the only area I always try to avoid in Singapore. Well, after so long, I went there and eat Filipino Cuisine.

17 days to go (14 April 2012)
I went for an afternoon jog around my place. It just rained and still drizzling a little. To my surprised, there were monkeys scattered about in the park. Well, there were "Beware of Monkeys" sign in the park but I never really believed that there were monkeys residing in the area. It scared me a little but I have to go for my jog. They never approached me so I am more than glad. I tried doing some yoga postures at home. I am still not flexible enough, though.

16 days to go (15 April 2012)
I went for my third hot yoga class. I have work at 1500hrs and I went for the 1230hrs class. The yoga class ends at 1400hrs and I have to rush my bath and make-up if I don't want to be late for my work. Fortunately, I managed to attend the briefing and be not so late.

15 days to go (16 April 2012)
I had my dinner outside since I don't like what they serve in the staff cafeteria. It was good that there is a food court just below our hotel. I had chicken teriyaki that comes with rice, coleslaw and fries. I love the coleslaw of the western cuisine store. Actually, I only eat coleslaw from that store.

14 days to go (17 April 2012)
After a long time, I, once again, ate Takoyaki from Takopachi. I told myself that I'm never buying from them again since the staff are all moody and the last time I buy from them, they gave me the wrong order. But! Takoyaki is just so love. Their store is the one nearest in the area so I'm taking pains in dealing with the staff again. All for the beloved Takoyaki.

13 days to go (18 April 2012)
It's Wednesday! That means that western cuisine is served in the staff cafeteria. My favorite was the Penne in white cream sauce with seafood and vegetables and toasted parmesan. It's just so delicious.

12 days to go (19 April 2012)
I finally started my Beer Trail! (It's actually something I intend to post next time) I went with a friend, and also visited one of the coffee shops that participated in Coffee Trail. So we went to Forty Hands, for the Coffee Trail, and I ordered and Piccolo Cappuccino and Red Bean Pau. I love the pau. Then, we went to Heart of House which we had difficulty to find because we turned into the wrong street. I had a Honeydew Melon Beer and it's good. :) I never really thought that fruit beers taste differently than the barley or lager ones.

11 days to go (20 April 2012)
I had my fifth class in hot yoga and I'm gettin used to it. Somehow, every after my yoga class, I always eat at Lucky Plaza and it's really costly for me.

10 days to go (21 April 2012)
It's my off so I continued my Beer Trail. I went to Wok and Barrel and tried the Jungle Beer. Oh, how I wish to say more about the restaurant but just wait for it's official entry. I also went to Smitten Daymakers Coffee and Tea Bar and tried their coffee, sandwich and yolkless cheesesake. I sure spent more than the budget. My favorite part of the day was my night photography at Riverside Point. It was quite fun.

9 days to go (22 April 2012)
I had my 6th yoga class today and sure, I don't really have to count the number of classes I have attended. I had my favorite choco mochi again and my assistant manager loved it too. I also had a Takoyaki from Takopachi.

8 days to go (23 April 2012)
I had a simple and quick pasta for dinner. I'm really hungry and there's nothign in the fridge so I fixed myself a bowl of tomato based pasta. This is not an ideal supper but that's all I got in the cupboard.

7 days to go (24 April 2012)
I went to Basement 1 at Centerpoint and had my dinner there. My company is providing employee's meal but I just don't like the food most of the time. In addidtion, I'd rather spend for some good food than have myself suffer from starvation. And I really spend a lot for good food.

6 days to go (25 April 2012)
It's my off once again and I met with some friends. We had an early dinner at another friend's workplace that serves western cuisine in large servings - Botak's Backyard. Then, we went to Ji Biru, a restaurant and barm participating in Beer Trail. It's Wednesday and we're all girls so it's ladies' night. :)

5 days to go (26 April 2012)
After work, I went to see a friend who also finishes work early. We met at SOHO Coffee Singapore, then to Marina Bay Sands, then to Suntec City, and stayed at the area around Esplanade. I managed to see a good city sunset with him. And yes, this friend is a 'He' but no more than a friend. It was like a date though and we admired Marina Bay Sands at night.

4 days to go (27 April 2012)
I'm off from work early again and I will be having a dinner later with my department colleagues. But before that, I went to Big Bad Wolf, another Beer Trail participant. I had a Peach Beer and Apple Pie. I highly recommend the Apple Pie. For the department dinner, we had it at Urban Beach Bar owned by the reception manager's friend.

3 days to go (28 APril 2012)
I was late for work. Why? The reason was a traffic-jam caused by a road accident. From Bukit Panjang to Whitely Road, usually it would only take me 10 minutes. However, this time, I was stuck just at BKE for 30 minutes!

2 days to go (29 April 2012)
What made my day was the online release of Dengeki Daisy manga and a couple of other mangas I read. I'm simple so that makes me happy.

1 day to go (30 April 2012)
Today is the last day before I turn 21. Tomorrow is my big day but today is like the celebration. We had the host recognition today which happens every two months. I'm a May celebrant so my turn to claim my birthday envelop will be on June. Well, I like attending host recognition since I get to eat good food. Their birthday cake this time was Chocolate Truffle! Could there be anything sumptuous than this on the buffet? Well, in our buffet it was the best dessert present.

That sums up my twenty-one days to twenty-one. My birthday passed more than a month a go and it was a bit unexpected to be honest. No birthday post too. :)

It's by a writer, and I don't know him too.

Search a little, his credibility you'll prove.

It's worth trying, and worth reading.

Just a couple of minutes from your time.
